Aquamarine can take anywhere from tens of thousands to millions of years to form and can be discovered in intrusive igneous (fire born) rock bodies and within metamorphic rock (rocks subjected to volatile conditions deep within the earth). The crystals grow layer-by-layer as hydrothermal fluids deposit minerals into cavities within the host rock. As a member of the beryl family, this gem crystallises in stunning hexagonal shapes.
